Slovenia and Austria and Germany and . . .

The original plan had been to stay in Croatia for a few days, but since the ferries were not with us we decided to go for a change of scenery and visit the Alps. We had enjoyed Slovenia on our brief visit a few years ago, but had not been able to go up north then. We had to stop and camp in Lubljana but the next morning we drove straight up to delightful Bled, at the base of the Julian Alps. It's a nice place, with a huge lake and castle and lots to do. Although we could happily have entertained ourselves there for a day or two, Simon had made an important discovery: we were not too far from Obersalzberg, the Nazi retreat with Hitler's famous Eagle's Nest. So off we drove.

We attempted to race through Austria, although extensive tunnel closings and roadworks scuppered us. We arrived in stunning Berchegaden in the late afternoon, pitched the tent and went off to find dinner. Unable to find a BBQ, a local pointed out a very good, traditional Bavarian restaurant and we had ribs and snitzel and the best cheese soup ever. The next morning we woke up in a cloud, which fortunately burned off into a beautiful day. We visited the excellent Documentation Obersalzberg museum that followed the rise and fall of the Nazis, eventually ending up in Hitler's bunker, and then took the lift up to climb to the summit for beautiful views of the valley and lake. After a quick trip to Salzberg to watch the last part of the Ryder Cup golf we had dinner next to the lake. We left early the next morning bound for Milan . . . E
